SCIENCE EXPLORATION OF EROSION

Think about the two different demonstrations that took place outside this week.

First, explain what we did in the first ditch. Tell about the landforms you saw being formed. Explain how you knew what you were seeing. (example: A valley was formed because a low place between the two mountains was formed.)

Next, the second paragraph will tell about what we did in the ditch at the top of the hill and what you learned.

You will be graded on whether you used all of the vocabulary words correctly and if you followed the directions to form two paragraphs with topic sentences and concluding sentences and had all required information.

Use the following vocabulary in 2 well written paragraphs. Be sure to include an explanation of how you know each of the things you learned. You may type it here or write on a separate sheet of notebook paper. You will have 2 days to work on it before turning it in.
erosion sediment meander canyon delta
river basin deposition slope dam lake

The first ditch helped me learn a few things. First, Mrs. Greenslade made a mimi-mountain. She poured water on it with a hose. There was erosion when the water was poured on the mini-mountain. The mini-mountain was like a dam to the mini-lake forming on the right side of the mountain. On the left side, a river was on a slope. There were meanders in the river. There was a lot of sediment in the river. There were a few deltas too. Deposition was left after Mrs. Greenslade turned off the hose. There was a basin in the mountain. The first ditch was interesting to watch and learn about.

The ditch at the top of the hill was fun to work with. The whole fourth grade got into groups and made dams. Five minutes later, Mrs. Greenslade got another hose and sprayed the top of the ditch with water. The current was kind of strong. My groups dam didn't hold the water. After the hose was turned off, some of the dams looked like they had tiny canyons in them. Building the dams in the ditch was fun and taught me how dams are made.
